Goatskin Leather Jackets: Why Riders and Pilots Choose Them

Goatskin is the leather riders and pilots chose when they could choose anything. It was the hide of the US Navy's G-1 flight jacket, it is still used for the best motorcycle gloves, and it is quietly one of the best materials for a jacket you intend to wear hard. This guide explains what goatskin leather is, how it compares to cowhide and sheepskin, and why our goatskin biker jackets are the ones riders pick.

What goatskin leather is

Goatskin is the tanned hide of a goat. It is thinner than cowhide but has a very dense, tight fibre structure, which gives it a high strength-to-weight ratio. Its most recognisable feature is the grain: a fine, pebbled texture of small ridges that no other common jacket leather has. The natural lanolin in the hide makes it supple and gives it good water resistance.

Goatskin vs cowhide vs sheepskin

Property Goatskin Cowhide Sheepskin
Weight Light to medium Heavy Light
Tensile strength Very high for its weight High Medium
Abrasion resistance High Highest Medium
Softness when new Supple Stiff Soft
Break-in One to two weeks Weeks to months Days
Water resistance Good (natural lanolin) Moderate Moderate
Grain Fine pebbled Smooth or pronounced Fine, smooth
Scuff visibility Low; the pebble hides marks Medium High
Best for Riding jackets, flight jackets, daily wear Heavy bikers, workwear Fashion jackets, bombers

In short: goatskin gives you most of cowhide's toughness at closer to sheepskin's weight, and it is softer out of the box than cowhide. The trade-off is that it is less common, so there are fewer styles and colours to choose from.

Why riders like goatskin

  • Strength without weight. A goatskin jacket is noticeably lighter on the shoulders than a cowhide one of similar protection.
  • Flexibility. The dense but thin hide bends easily at the elbows and shoulders, which matters on a bike.
  • Weather. The lanolin content sheds light rain and resists drying out.
  • It hides wear. The pebbled grain disguises scuffs that would show on smooth leather.

A reminder that applies to all our jackets: unless a jacket is built and certified as protective equipment, it is a fashion jacket, whatever the hide. Our goatskin bikers are strong everyday jackets; if you ride seriously, read fashion jacket vs riding jacket and consider a custom goatskin jacket with armour pockets.

Goatskin in flight jackets

The US Navy specified goatskin for the G-1 flight jacket because it was tough, light and tolerated salt air and sea spray better than horsehide. If you have seen a vintage G-1 with its pebbled surface and mouton collar, you have seen goatskin at its best. Our guide to A-2, B-3 and G-1 flight jackets covers the history.

Caring for goatskin

Goatskin is low-maintenance. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth when dusty. Condition it once a year with a neutral leather conditioner, less often than cowhide because of its natural oils; too much conditioner will flatten the pebbled grain. Let it dry naturally if it gets wet, away from heat. Store it on a wide hanger out of direct sun, which will fade tan and cognac shades over years.

Colours and finishes

Goatskin takes aniline and semi-aniline finishes well, so the natural grain shows through. Tan, cognac and black are the classic colours; the tan and light brown shades develop a rich patina where the jacket flexes. Our goatskin bikers come in tan and black, with antique brass or gunmetal hardware to match. See them in the biker collection and tan leather jackets.

Is goatskin right for you?

  • Yes if you want one tough jacket that is comfortable from the first week and you like a textured grain.
  • Yes if you ride and want a lighter alternative to heavy cowhide.
  • Maybe not if you want the softest possible feel (choose lambskin) or a smooth, glossy surface (choose smooth cowhide or sheepskin).
  • Maybe not if you need a specific colour; the goatskin range is smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Is goatskin leather good quality?

Yes. It is one of the strongest leathers by weight and was chosen for military flight jackets and motorcycle gloves for exactly that reason.

Is goatskin better than cowhide?

It is lighter, softer when new and more water-resistant. Cowhide is thicker and slightly more abrasion-resistant. For most people goatskin is the more comfortable choice; for maximum toughness, cowhide.

Does goatskin stretch?

Very little. Buy your correct size; see our fit guide.

Is goatskin warm?

About the same as sheepskin unlined. With a quilted lining it is a three-season jacket; with shearling it is a winter jacket.
